Biotechnology Laboratory

Explore molecular and cellular biology through hands-on laboratory experiences using equipment and techniques that support undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research.

Where Biology Meets Discovery

The Biotechnology Laboratory supports basic and advanced applications of molecular and cellular biology, with undergraduate students actively participating in hands-on laboratory work.

The facility provides access to specialized equipment and molecular biology techniques for undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty research.

Hands-On Experience Undergraduate students gain practical experience using laboratory equipment and molecular biology techniques.
Research Ready Facilities support student and faculty projects across molecular, cellular, microbiological, and genetic research.
Advanced Equipment Students have access to instrumentation used for imaging, amplification, analysis, culture, and separation.

Research Supported by the Lab

The Biotechnology Laboratory has supported a variety of faculty and student research projects, including:

  • Development of yeast with gene deletions in specific aminopeptidase genes, including cell-cycle and gene-regulation analysis.
  • Analysis of genomic differences in Frankia nodulating plants.
  • Analysis of DNA damage related to psoralen exposure.
  • DNA typing of rainbow and cutthroat trout.
  • Isolation and characterization of acid phosphatase from Penicillium.
  • Isolation and detection of pathogen DNA in water supplies.
