Undergraduate Research

Hands-On Learning

Undergraduate Research

Take what you learn in the classroom and apply it to real scientific questions through laboratory, field-based, and faculty-guided research.

Undergraduate research is an important part of the Biology experience at CSU Pueblo. Students have opportunities to work one-on-one or in small groups with faculty members while developing practical research skills and exploring biological questions in greater depth.

Research can take place in the laboratory, in the field, or through collaborative projects that combine different areas of biology. Opportunities are available throughout the academic year, and students at different stages of their degree are encouraged to explore ways to become involved.

Why Participate in Undergraduate Research?

Build Scientific Skills

Gain experience with research methods, data collection, analysis, scientific communication, and problem solving.

Learn Beyond the Classroom

Explore scientific questions in greater depth and apply concepts from your coursework to real research projects.

Work with Faculty

Build professional relationships with faculty mentors while learning how research is designed, conducted, and communicated.

Prepare for Your Future

Research experience can strengthen preparation for graduate school, professional programs, internships, and careers in science.

Research Opportunities

Biology students may participate in a variety of research experiences depending on faculty projects, student interests, and preparation. Opportunities may include:

  • Laboratory-based research
  • Field research and ecological studies
  • Faculty-directed research projects
  • Collaborative research with other students
  • Independent research experiences
  • Research connected to Biology and Wildlife & Natural Resources

Project CUATRO

Biology and Wildlife & Natural Resources students may also have opportunities through Project CUATRO, which provides undergraduate research, faculty mentoring, peer mentoring, professional development, career preparation, and leadership development.

Project CUATRO is designed to help students become part of a connected, supportive research community while building academic and professional skills.

How to Get Started

You do not need to have a complete research idea before reaching out. A good first step is to learn about faculty research interests and identify areas of biology that interest you.

When contacting a faculty member or the department, consider sharing:

  • Your major and year in the program
  • Areas of biology that interest you
  • Relevant courses you have completed
  • Any previous laboratory, field, or research experience
  • Your academic or career goals

Some projects may be open to students early in their academic careers, while others may require completion of core courses or previous research experience.
