Program Overview

The Political Science BA/BS program prepares students to examine the power behind the policies and politics of the U.S. government and international relations.

Our program provides students with a basic understanding of American politics and policies as well as courses designed to enhance critical thinking, analytic skills, improve research practices, and communication skills, both oral and written.

As a political science student, you will complete a comprehensive curriculum that delivers high-demand knowledge, skills, and abilities in several areas such as:

  • American Elections
  • Terrorism
  • Democracy and Dictatorship
  • Public Policy
  • International Relations
  • U.S. Foreign and Security Policy

Students in the Political Science Program can specialize in their field of interest through concentration areas in General Education or Secondary Education Emphasis.

The Political Science program prepares students for a wide range of careers, including academia, law, state, and federal government, private enterprise, the military, and entry into graduate programs.

    WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE B.A. AND B.S. DEGREES IN POLITICAL SCIENCE?

    The political science requirements for the B.A. and the B.S. are identical. The difference lies in the fact that the B.A. requires foreign language certification while the B.S. does not.

    WHY STUDY POLITICAL SCIENCE?

    Training in political science helps students understand and analyze domestic and global politics and policy. The Political Science curriculum develops skills that are essential in the modern workplace, including critical thinking, communication skills, statistical methods, and research design. It prepares students for a wide range of careers in the private, public, and non-profit sectors.

    WHAT CAN I DO WITH A DEGREE IN POLITICAL SCIENCE?

    A degree in political science provides the knowledge and skills to succeed in a wide range of professional careers. Graduates in political science pursue careers in public policy, law, government, foreign service, education, business, military, homeland security, social work, and more.

    HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO FINISH A POLITICAL SCIENCE DEGREE?

    A political science degree is designed to be completed in four years. The degree requires the accumulation of 120 credit hours. For students completing in four years, the schedule usually involves 30 credit hours per academic year or 15 hours per semester. Some students finish more quickly by taking additional courses in the summer. Others with demanding work or family commitments may take longer to finish.
