Major Concentrations

Basic Biology

The Bachelor of Science degree in Biology prepares students to work in various career opportunities in education, research, government, medical practice, and much more.

Students will gain a strong knowledge of concepts and terminology in molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecological biology.

The program provides a basic understanding of living organisms, so that students may understand core biology management knowledge to drive improvements in biological-related fields.

Biomedical Sciences

The Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a concentration in Biomedical Sciences encompasses preparation for many healthcare fields including the following pre-professional programs:

Each of the pre-professional programs has an advisor who can provide detailed and current information about the undergraduate work which the student should pursue to provide the foundation necessary for later entry into a professional school. The student should contact the specialized advisor as early as possible.

We offer advising toward several professional programs. Specific requirements vary and faculty mentors will assist with course choices.

Cellular & Molecular Biosciences

The Cellular and Molecular Biosciences Concentration provides excellent training for students interested in careers in the diverse sub-fields of biomedicine: Cellular & Molecular, Bioinformatics, Medical Laboratory Sciences, and Forensics. Students completing this option are ready for graduate school, professional school, or entry into the industry. This might include pharmaceutical Research, Forensics, Bioinformatics, or other areas.

Students will utilize our state-of-the-art facilities in their pursuit of groundbreaking discoveries.

Forensics students might consider CHEM 160/L, CHEM 260/L, and Sociology courses. Bioinformatics students might consider a computer programming course and additional statistics or probability coursework. Students are also recommended to explore the Biology-Chemistry Double Major.

We offer advising toward several professional programs. Specific requirements vary and faculty mentors will assist with course choices.

Biology & Chemistry Double Major

The Biology & Chemistry Double Major concentration combines the study of biology with chemistry courses, so that students may understand core knowledge to drive a scientific approach in bioscience-related fields.

The program will prepare students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in graduate or professional medical school.

We offer advising toward several professional programs. Specific requirements vary and faculty mentors will assist with course choices.

Secondary Teacher Certification

The Bachelor of Science in Biology with a concentration in Secondary Teaching is for students who seek to obtain a secondary teacher license in Biology. Students will also work closely with the Teacher Education Program to gain the experience and necessary skills to thrive, lead, and innovate in the classroom.

Preparation for secondary science education involves a B.S. in a science discipline, plus a minor in education. This minor includes courses with field experience hours in a school district.

Students apply for formal admission to the teacher education program during the Frameworks in Education course (ED 301). In addition to coursework, students must pass a PRAXIS content exam for science prior to acceptance for student teaching during their last semester.
