CSU Pueblo Biology Professor Promoted to Senior Editor of Prestigious Science Education Journal
Dr. Amaya Garcia Costas takes on a national leadership role with the Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education.
PUEBLO, Colo. — Colorado State University Pueblo Associate Professor Amaya Garcia Costas has been promoted to Senior Editor of the Tips and Tools section of the Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education, published by ASM Press.
The appointment took effect in July and recognizes Garcia Costas' work advancing science education and supporting the peer-review process for microbiology and biology educators across the country.

Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Biology at Colorado State University Pueblo, and STEM lead for the university's Discovery Scholars program.
The New Role
Garcia Costas will lead the journal's Tips and Tools section and help guide editorial decisions for submitted manuscripts.
She will oversee and assign manuscripts to a team of six editors while continuing her own peer-review work.
The leadership role comes with a three-year appointment.
The position includes support to attend the American Society for Microbiology Conference for Undergraduate Educators each November.
Building on Two Years of Editorial Work
Garcia Costas has served as an associate editor for the journal for the past two years. In that role, she coordinated peer reviews and made publication recommendations on approximately 12 to 15 manuscript submissions each year.
Journal leadership recognized the quality of her peer-review work and her engagement with education research, leading to the promotion to Senior Editor.
Connecting CSU Pueblo to Science Education Nationwide
Through the editorial role, Garcia Costas works directly with microbiology educators and researchers from institutions around the country, giving her a close look at emerging classroom practices and new approaches to science education.
Bringing New Ideas Back to CSU Pueblo
Garcia Costas has said the editorial work helps her stay connected to what microbiology faculty are doing in classrooms and departments nationwide. Reviewing new research and teaching strategies also provides ideas she can bring back to students at CSU Pueblo.
She views the role as both professional service and an opportunity to participate in broader conversations about how microbiology education continues to evolve.
