Press Release

PUEBLO - The Center for International Programs and the Colorado International Student Association at Colorado State University-Pueblo will hold a HOLI Festival to celebrate the arrival of spring at 4 p.m., March 11 on the lawn west of the Administration building.

This event is open to students and the community. Colored powders will be provided at no cost. Attendees should be advised that the powder will stain clothing, so participants should wear attire that can be discarded if needed as items may be damaged. For more information, contact the Center for International Programs at 719.549.2329.

Traditionally, HOLI Festival was celebrated by followers of the Hindu faith in South Asia, mainly India and Nepal. The night before the festival a large bonfire and party would ensue featuring music, dance, and singing in preparation for the next day's event. A color battle takes place the following morning using colored powders and water dispersed by hand, water balloons or water guns. Everyone is armed in this friendly battle where the targets include friends, family, and even strangers. Towards the evening, people gather to share stories and visit with fellow festival goers.

The festival has become a popular celebration in non-Hindus countries because it symbolizes new beginnings, the victory of good over evil, and a time to repair broken relationships.
