Press Release

PUEBLO – The Colorado State University-Pueblo Marching Band, under the direction of Dr. Alan Mills, along with cheer and dance squads, will help promote the new FOX dramedy RED BAND SOCIETY at an event on Sept. 12 at the Colorado Children’s Hospital in Denver. A performance by the CSU-Pueblo Marching Band’s performance will be included as part of 10 similar events being held at Children’s Hospitals across the country. The Denver event is the only Colorado appearance and CSU-Pueblo is the only Colorado band. Other cities on the tour include: Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, and Phoenix.

During the month of September, FOX and Red Band Society will visit children’s hospitals across the country, sponsoring marching band performances and pizza and ice cream parties for patients, families, and hospital staff. As part of its participation with FOX, the CSU-Pueblo Marching Band, along with cheer and dance teams, will receive:
  • Transportation to and from campus
  • Red Band Society sashes to wear during the performance
  • Lunch for the band after the performance
  • Donation to the hospital on behalf of FOX

Since it was re-established in 2009 along with the return of a football team, the CSU-Pueblo Marching Band has brought a renewed spirit to ThunderWolf events and proudly represented the University at a variety of parades, including the Colorado State Fair and Fiesta Parades and the Pueblo Veterans’ Day Parade.  The full 75-member marching band, cheerleaders, and danceline (100 total) will attend. The band will do a full stand-still exhibition performance in front of the hospital patients, family members, and hospital staff, then break out into smaller groups for mini-performances for the patients inside the hospital.

RED BAND SOCIETY is a provocative, unconventional and unique coming-of-age dramedy about a group of rule-bending friends and the adults who mentor them through the ups and downs of adolescence in Los Angeles' Ocean Park Hospital. Exploring everything from strong friendships, and first loves, to humorous mishaps and heartbreaks, the series is a story of life, with an edgy comedic tone all its own. The series premiere is slated for Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 9 p.m. on FOX.

These teens form a life-changing bond and singular kinship, represented by their red hospital bands. They face shared experiences, both uplifting and challenging, tragic and comedic, ordinary and out-of-the-ordinary – and they do it together. When you're brought to the brink, that's when you laugh the loudest, love the strongest and cry the hardest…This is the story of the RED BAND SOCIETY.

“What a tremendous opportunity to showcase our marching band, the music department, and the University,” said CSU-Pueblo President Lesley Di Mare. “The kind of outreach that our marching band does on a regular basis will be aptly reflected by this social media portrayal.”

More about the CSU-Pueblo Marching Band:

The band annually performs off campus at multiple high school marching band contests each fall. This year it has exhibition performances at the Denver Metro Regional Contest at Littleton High School on October 13, the Southern Regional Contest at Liberty High School on October 15, and the Class 1A, 2A, 3A State Marching Band Championships at Sports Authority Field in Parker on October 27.  The band also will travel to support the football team at their game on October 25 in Denver versus School of Mines.

The 7th Annual Band Day this year will bring more than 350 high school students from across Colorado to campus to play with the ThunderWolves Marching Band on October 4.  Interested high school students should have their band director contact me to participate.  Space is limited and reservations are required.   Both Sand Creek High School and Pueblo West High School marching bands will each march at half time at band day. CSU-Pueblo is in good company as the other bands included in the RED BAND promotions represent the following higher education institutions: University of Southern California Trojans, Southern Methodist University, Rutgers University, University of Houston, Georgia Tech, University of Arizona, Illinois State University, Temple University, and Miami of Ohio.
