CSU-Pueblo Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium to bear Gonzales’ names

PUEBLO – A series of events will be held locally and throughout the state in April to mark the 100th anniversary of the Great Colorado Coalfield War of 1913-1914, during which the Ludlow Massacre occurred. Among the local 100th anniversary events are lectures, a film and concert, as well as the 10th annual Ludlow Memorial Labor Fest Academic Symposium, coordinated by Colorado State University-Pueblo, El Pueblo Museum, Rawlings Library, and the Bessemer Historical Society and Steelworks Museum.
The strike of miners in the fall of 1913 demanding higher wages and safer working conditions may have been completely ignored in the history books if it were not for a skirmish between striking miners and the Colorado National Guard about 20 miles north of Trinidad, on April 20, 1914, that resulted in the deaths of more than 20 people, including 11 children and 2 women. The Ludlow Massacre sparked a war in southern Colorado which ended with President Woodrow Wilson calling out federal troops to squelch the violence. A memorial to the miners was built in 1918 south of Pueblo.
Local events in April begin with a reading by David Mason, author of Ludlow, as part of the Southern Colorado Reading Series at 7 p.m. on April 15 in CSU-Pueblo’s LARC 109.
