Press Release

PUEBLO – The Ballet Folklorico at Colorado State University-Pueblo, which was re-established as a student organization last spring and incorporated into the University’s curriculum last fall, will unveil new costumes at two separate performances on April 4 and 5 in Hoag Recital Hall.

Both performances will begin at 7 p.m. A $5.00 donation will go toward purchase of additional performance costumes, which will further their efforts to accept future performance opportunities in Denver, California, and Chihuahua, Mexico CSU-Pueblo students will be admitted free with student identification.

The performance, directed by Director Dora Luz Cobián-Klein and Artistic Director Iskra Merino Martínez, will feature CSU-Pueblo Ballet Folklorico, a student organization that includes both student and staff performers, as well as students from Cesar Chavez Academy/Dolores Huerta Preparatory High School. This performance is sponsored by a Student Organization Funding Grant, a Diversity Initiatives Grant, and by the offices of the President and the Dean of the College for Humanities and Social Sciences.

President Lesley Di Mare approved allocating $20,000 in Capps Capozzolo Center funds to purchase new costumes. Di Mare felt the work of the group merited the support. Cobian-Klein said the traditional costumes represent the different states of Mexico with their beautiful colors certain to enhance the performances, which will include dances from the Mexican states of Yucatan, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, and Chihuahua.

“We are so grateful for the support, and the dancers feel a great responsibility to perform well as a result,” she said.

A special presentation will be made to Mario Ruiz, a junior foreign language/Spanish major from Fountain, one of the founders of the group and the only student who has continually been a part of Ballet Folklorico.

For more information on the performance or membership in the troupe, contact Cobian-Klein at  doraluz.cobian@csupueblo.edu or 719.549.2537.
