Press Release

PUEBLO – Colorado State University-Pueblo will celebrate Black History and Women’s History Month in March with an appearance by the first African American female licensed NASCAR  driver, Tia Norfleet.

The multi-talented Suffolk, Va. native is the daughter of 20-year veteran NASCAR driver Bobby Norfleet. She will discuss her career beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 20 in Library and Academic Resources Center 109. She may make additional community appearances as well with area youth organizations.

Norfleet began racing at the age of nine under her father’s tutelage. In addition to her “Get Right or Get Left” mentality, experts believe that she has a singing voice reminiscent of Whitney Houston with the range and skill to sing in any genre of music.

On the racetrack, Norfleet boasts an impressive winning record racing cars. From 1995- 2000, she began racing go karts, with 22 top 10 finishes, six top five finishes and two wins. She then moved up to the Bandoleros Series from 2000-2003, accumulating three top 10 finishes and two top five finishes. In 2004, she began racing in late model series with 18 starts and two top 15 place finishes. In the drag racing circuit, she has amassed an impressive 52 starts with 37 wins.

Off the track, Tia and her father volunteer in a number of programs together, including entrepreneurship for at-risk youth. She is committed to an array of programs, including, but not limited to, the National African American Drug Policy Coalition and the Motorsports Institute, Inc. Tia promotes her literacy program called Driven to Read through her comic book and cartoon series “Lil Tia”.

Tia Norfleet is the “Goodwill Ambassador for The International Museum of Twenty-first Century Arts, (TIMOTCA), and Brand Ambassador for Verizon Wireless initiative “Celebrating Your Story, Powering Your Network program. Tia hopes to spread the message that “if one can think it, then one can.”
