National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) Program - 2024

The SCITT in collaboration with the School of Engineering is hosting a two-week (10 working days) non-residential National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) program which takes place Wednesday, June 5 through Tuesday, June 18, 2024 for middle school students. The program will run daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each selected student will receive a full scholarship that covers tuition, stationery, laboratory usage, supplies, field trips, snacks and daily buffet lunch in the university cafe. A maximum of 25 students will be selected from the NSTI applications to participate in the 2024 summer program. 

Students interested in the program are encouraged to apply immediately. The NSTI program is open to all students in sixth through eighth grades currently attending public and private schools in Colorado. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is sponsoring the program with the support from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The objective of the NSTI program is to provide awareness and stimulate interest in secondary school students to take advantage of opportunities that exist in the transportation industry.

Student participants will be introduced to a variety of transportation systems, learn about career opportunities in transportation, relevant educational and skill requirements, and have opportunities to meet people who work in various areas of the transportation system in the state of Colorado. In addition, students will participate in various activities including:

  • Seminars and demonstrations
  • Laboratory projects or hands-on activities
  • Field trips and recreation
  • Classroom instruction to enhance academic and STEM skills

The study topics include highway operations, highway safety, materials, bridges, railways, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and homeland security.

Students interested in the NSTI program should complete and submit an application form.  All applications should be received as soon as possible.
