Practicum
Practicum Overview
Practicum allows students to observe real-life situations handled by professionals in the field. Social work students are required to apply for admission into the practicum.
An orientation meeting is scheduled by the Practicum Coordinator each semester for students planning to enroll in placement during the next session. The BSW Practicum Manual will be distributed and discussed during the Fall orientation meeting.
Additional information is available in the Social Work program BSW Practicum Manual.
Field Placement Hours
BSW Program
Students complete 448 clock hours:
- 224 hours in Fall
- 224 hours in Spring
In accordance with professional and University standards, students may be denied acceptance or withdrawn from the program or placement practicum for academic or behavioral reasons. Students denied admission into placement may file a grievance in accordance with University procedures.
Practicum Coordinator Process
Students are never required to find their own practicum. The Practicum Coordinator works with each student to identify appropriate agencies based on interests, experience, and availability.
- Practicum applications are completed through Experiential Learning Cloud.
- The Practicum Coordinator reviews applications and meets with each potential placement student.
- The Practicum Coordinator determines whether the student meets placement requirements.
- The Practicum Coordinator discusses eligibility and potential agencies with the student.
- Students must not contact placement agencies without coordinator approval.
- Students interview with the agency practicum instructor once approved.
- The Practicum Coordinator confirms the placement decision with the agency.
- If both student and agency agree, the Practicum Agreement is signed and placement becomes official.
