New Student Orientation

Colorado State University Pueblo prepares for new student orientation in new ways with old practices. The Student Engagement and Leadership (SEAL) office implemented online orientation over five years ago, which now provides ground work for new resources amidst the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

Online orientation appears on incoming students’ Personal Access to Web Services (PAWS) account for completion after a student enrolls at CSU Pueblo. Online orientation is required prior to registering for spring classes during the academic year. Once the online training is completed, then students are given the option to register for in-person orientation.

The online orientation includes academics, pride and traditions of the CSU Pueblo campus, student support services, student wellness training, campus technology, and what life looks like on campus with Residence Life and Housing, food services and more. Although online orientation has been implemented for years, this year’s in person orientation will look different due to pandemic concerns.

“What we’re doing this year is there are going to be two days of orientation with two sessions each day on Saturday and Sunday of move in week,” said Jordan Cushman, Assistant Director of Student Orientation and Transition Programs at CSU Pueblo. “Each session will be capped at 75 people.”

In-person orientation has always taken into account self-identification for students to help give students the tools they need to be successful. For example, the SEAL office works closely with Military and Veteran Success Center for students with GI benefits in order to have specific questions answered and support given.

“We’re trying to make it as engaging as possible while still practicing social distancing and having safe practices,” said Gena Alfonso, Assistant Dean of Student Engagement, Events and Leadership at CSU Pueblo.

Parent and family orientation will be virtual this year to limit the people on CSU Pueblo’s campus.  Zoom sessions will be planned with faculty and staff to give parents and families opportunity to ask individualized questions.

Then students are still encouraged to sign up for in-person orientation prior to the start of fall semester. Commuter students, out of state students and resident students will stay together in orientation groups to give students an opportunity to form relationships with one another. SEAL looks to support students with similar interests or academic majors to be paired together as well.

“We’re hiring more orientation leaders this year because we have to have smaller groups,” said Cushman. “So we want to give one-on-one attention and make it more individualized.”
