CSU-Pueblo to celebrate Vet’s Day with ceremony and concert

PUEBLO–Veteran’s Day activities at Colorado State University-Pueblo will include aircraft flyovers, a panel discussion by Latino veterans, and the second annual Home of Heroes Veteran’s Day Concert featuring the CSU-Pueblo music faculty and staff and the Fort Carson 4th Infantry Division Band.

The Veteran’s Day events will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11 with a panel discussion featuring Latino Veterans whose oral histories are on file with the Chicano Archives in the Library and Academic Resources Center (LARC). The panel will held in the General Classroom Building 213 and include local veteran George Autobee, among others. 

CSU-Pueblo also will be represented at the 11 a.m. ceremony downtown near the Veterans Bridge on the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo with remarks by President Lesley Di Mare and music by the CSU-Pueblo Chamber Choir.

The campus ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. at the Southeast Asia Memorial on campus. The monument was re-dedicated in 2011 with the addition of all Colorado soldiers who lost their lives in the Vietnam/Southeast Asia conflict. The expanded memorial now includes the 623 names of all Colorado service men and women who were killed in the war, including SCSC and CSU-Fort Collins alumni. 

CSU-Pueblo student and veteran Freshman Civil Engineering Technology major James Osteen will emcee the event, which will include a Color Guard by members of the CSU-Pueblo ROTC program and music by the CSU-Pueblo Chamber Choir. CSU-Pueblo will be represented by comments from President Lesley Di Mare and Associated Students’ Government President Sarah Zarr. The ceremony also will include a flyover by Doss Aviation, comments by United States Navy veteran Pueblo County Sheriff Kirk Taylor and Senior Foreign Language major Jose Alanis.  A reception will follow the ceremony at 3 p.m. in Hoag Recital Hall Foyer and will precede the second annual Home of Heroes Veterans Day Concert.

The 3:30 p.m. concert will feature faculty and student instrumental and vocal performance groups as well as the Fort Carson 4th Infantry Division Band. The event aims to raise funds for scholarships for veterans but thanks to sponsorship by Security Service Credit Union, all veterans will be admitted at no charge. Free-will donations will be accepted. 

All veterans are eligible to receive a free “tall” cup of coffee in Café Libro (LARC) located in as well as 20 percent off hoodies in the CSU-Pueblo Bookstore. Coupons for the discounts must be obtained from the Veterans Resource Center, Occhiato University Center 015.​
