Press Release

PUEBLO –Colorado State University-Pueblo and the Center for the Study of Homeland Security are offerings courses that lead to the completion of a Certificate in Homeland Security Studies in flexible formats tailored to fit the needs of students this fall through the Division of Extended Studies.

The Certificate is a three-course, nine credit-hour program for CSU-Pueblo students in any academic major, and for returning or non-degree seeking students pursuing career advancement. Examples of such students include: those in the military; local and state law enforcement; emergency services personnel; private security firms, or those simply interested in learning about homeland security. The Certificate curriculum includes a three-course sequence including Introduction to Homeland Security, Terrorism, and Critical Incident Management.

Faculty who lead these courses include individuals with extensive background in military, homeland defense, emergency management planning, continuity, critical infrastructure protection, and preventative policy.

Courses are available through the Division of Extended Studies and are offered as independent studies courses.  The Independent Study program allows students to register for courses year-around and complete them at their own pace over a six-month period. Steven Liebel, assistant professor and coordinator of the Homeland Security Program, said that given that courses are primarily online, students who cannot physically come to campus have an option to take the class because the manner of meeting is flexible.  He said if the student is in a remote location, even electronic communications (e.g., Skype) can be deemed acceptable.

“Independent Study classes and their delivery are tailored to fit the needs of the student and instructor,” said Liebel. “Some of these classes require numerous face-to-face meetings between faculty and students, others less so, with the  majority of them online and via correspondence.”

Courses are financial aid eligible for those who qualify when taken in conjunction with a CSU-Pueblo degree.
