Press Release

PUEBLO – The Army ROTC program at Colorado State University-Pueblo has won one of eight MacArthur Awards nationwide for the unit’s achievements in the 2012-13 school year. The award recognizes the eight schools, selected from among the 275 senior Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) units nationwide, as the top programs in the country.

The Mountain Ranger Battalion was selected as the top unit of the Cadet Command’s Fifth Brigade, which consists of 36 senior Army ROTC programs in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Wyoming.  The battalion consists of 135 students at both CSU-Pueblo and the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. The award is based on a combination of the achievement of the school’s commissioning mission, its cadets’, and standing on the Command’s national Order of Merit List and its cadet retention rate.

The awards, presented by Cadet Command and the Gen. Douglas MacArthur Foundation, recognize the ideals of, “duty, honor and country” as advocated by MacArthur.

Cadet Command and the MacArthur Foundation have given the awards annually since 1989. This is the third time the program has been selected for the award.  It was named the winner of the MacArthur Award in 1990 and 1991, designating them the "Best ROTC Battalion, Small College" in the nation. The 1990 MacArthur Award was presented by the Chief of Staff of the Army, General Carl Vuono.  In 1991, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Colin Powell presented the award.
