Weekend Workshop Artists

placeholder

The Department of Art & Creative Media offers Weekend Workshops by guest artists in a variety of emphasis areas. These one-credit-hour courses are usually offered twice a semester. The workshop begins with a Friday evening lecture by the guest artist followed by an intense two-day, hands-on creative session. The workshops are a great way for art students to learn additional techniques in art and experience art from a variety of instructors. The weekend workshops offer students additional avenues of earning upper-division credits. Please enjoy scenes from some of our visiting artists.

Brain McCallum and Michael Knutson

This will be a simultaneous workshop. Michael does a portrait in oil of a volunteer, while Brian does a wheel demo. This takes about 4-6 hours and includes hands-on figure work in clay for students.

With an extended workshop format we can do:

Figure demonstrations. 1/2- 1 day

Students can then break off into 2 dimensional and 3-dimensional areas. Brian will have students complete a simple figure - sculpted from a cylinder or a large head from a thrown pot (this requires a pretty advanced throwing technique). The scale would be based upon their level of throwing expertise. (If needed Brian can generate several cylinders for the students who lack throwing skills).

2- Dimensional students can create a portrait of another participant (or a self-portrait, depending upon your facilities) in oil or some other media.

Brian and Michael will present a lecture on their work as well.

Students earn one credit hour for this weekend workshop including 10 hours outside studio work and 10 hours writing an essay about the lives and work of the artists and how that relates to the student’s life and work.
