Colorado State University Pueblo Celebrates Women’s History Month with Professional Development, Dialogue and Delicacies

Colorado State University Pueblo celebrates Women’s History Month (WHM) throughout the month of March with accessible programming for students, faculty, staff and community members. WHM events at CSU Pueblo highlight prominent women of the Pueblo community, the efforts of students on campus, and present the opportunity for learning and dialogue.

"Our goal for March is to acknowledge the women who have uplifted the Pueblo community and the campus,” said Victoria Obregon, director of equity and inclusion at CSU Pueblo. “The best way to celebrate Women’s History Month is to celebrate the women who make history, especially the prominent women we have in our local community.”

Obregon and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee for Equity (DICE) team continue the work with heritage month celebrations on CSU Pueblo’s campus. To start WHM at CSU Pueblo, Obregon has connected faculty and staff to a professional development opportunity called Culturally Responsive Teaching. The informative session is online on Saturday, Mar. 6 at 10 a.m. The training focuses on educators’ culturally responsive education with design thinking to enhance the classroom experience.

Campus dining partner, A’viands is hosting two lunch menus in honor of WHM. On Wednesday, Mar. 10 A’viands serves ‘A Taste of Excellence’, a menu inspired by Ruth Steele in the Pack Café in the Occhiato Student Center on campus. Rita J. Martinez will be honored with a menu of her favorite foods in the Pack Café on Wednesday, Mar. 24.Both women were local leaders and champions for change who died during the COVID-19 pandemic.

CSU Pueblo is hosting a multigenerational panel of women who have impacted the Pueblo community on Thursday, Mar. 11 at 5:30 p.m. The Women’s Voices of Pueblo panel will speak on their experiences in various careers.

A Zoom trivia night takes place on Tuesday, Mar. 16 at 7 p.m. for WHM, an event featuring information on famous women in history and local legends. A final event of the month includes, a discussion of the Southern Colorado Women Exhibit on Tuesday, Mar. 30 at noon.

CSU Pueblo continues to include the land acknowledgment statement honoring the Native American land of the campus, which is read at the beginning of every Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion event.  Each event will be held online over Zoom using the Meeting ID: 563 496 4701.
