Student Success

Kenneth Derry

Peer Advocate of Veteran's Upward Bound & Class Instructor

"I spent the first four years after high school in the Marines. After serving in operations Enduring and Iraqi freedom, I consciously decided to see what civilian life was like. Civilian life is as much of a challenge as the Marines, and therefore I decided to do something for myself to have future success in life. I enrolled in Pikes Peak Community College and became a part of Veteran's Upward Bound. In academics I attained a 3.8 G.P.A and graduated with magna cum laude honors for my two year program. Amongst my peers, I was identified as a student leader and served in various roles while participating as a member of Student Government. I am devoted to helping other veterans succeed in higher education. My goals are to complete my Bachelor's degree and move on to Law School."

Kenneth A. McArthur

Public Defender

"I separated from the United States Navy in 1974. During this time, I had several responsibilities which precluded me from devoting necessary time and energy to scholastic endeavors, of those being a job with an attorney in Walsenburg, Colorado. From this experience, I decided to pursue my postsecondary education and become an attorney. I took a semester at Pueblo Community College in the Veterans Upward Bound program to gauge my transition to academia and commitment to pursuing a postsecondary education. I then enrolled as a full time student, completed my Associates Degree in two semesters and transferred to Colorado State University-Pueblo. With credits transferred from my earlier collegiate experiences and with great dedication and devotion to learning, I graduated only one year after matriculating at CSU-Pueblo. I majored in Sociology and graduated with honors. I have decided to pursue my law degree and then a career as a Public Defender. I established myself not only as scholar, but also as an ideal model of how someone can re-enter the academic world, pursue an ambition and excel doing so at any age."
