Academic Year Programming

Tutoring

Participants are expected to take full advantage of the After School Program. During the After School program students receive academic assistance from our high school teachers (site coordinators) and highly-qualified tutors. Many students also simply utilize this program to complete homework and create study groups with other participants.

In-School Counseling Sessions

At least once per month, Upward Bound Advisors will travel to the schools and visit with students from elective courses, or during the After School Program.  These sessions focus on discussions tailored to the needs of each grade level.

Freshmen & Sophomore students:

  • Success Factors, Self-Awareness, Time Management, Budgeting, Study Skills, Self-Advocacy, Community Service, Remediation, College Admission Requirements, etc.

Junior & Senior students:

  • Success Factors, Financial and Financial Aid Literacy, Self-Advocacy, Scholarships, ACT, Accuplacer, College Applications, Essay Writing, Resumes, Cover Letters, Community Service, Leadership Development, Campus Engagement, Academic Probation in College, Remediation, etc.

Upward Bound Staff will also educate participants on Advanced Placement (AP)/International Baccalaureate (IB) Courses.  Students will also be educated about the requirements for Dual Enrollment and Concurrent Enrollment and their options for enrollment at the community college level and university level.

Upward Bound Advisors will work collaboratively to review grades with students on a regular basis, so students can avoid receiving Ds and Fs, and ultimately avoid being placed on Academic Probation.

Monthly Campus Enrichment Activities

Students participate in a number of fieldtrips designed to expose participants to social and cultural events that they might otherwise not be able to attend.  These events can range from skiing to going to a ballet and other fine arts events.

Students also visit many college and university campuses during their four years with the program. This educates our students on the wide variety of higher education opportunities available in the state of Colorado.
