REV 89 earns 2020 Dr. Marjorie Yambor Signature Station Award

The student-operated radio station at Colorado State University-Pueblo, KTSC-FM, REV 89, has received the Broadcast Education Association's Dr. Marjorie Yambor National Signature Station Award for 2020. This is the highest radio honor given by the BEA and represents a zenith in the ongoing effort by the media communication department to provide a well-rounded and immersive broadcasting experience for the department's radio students. REV89 is now the only college radio station in the U.S to win this National Signature Station Award twice.

The Dr. Marjorie Yambor National Signature Station Competition invites submissions of superior protocol and practices at student-run, faculty-advised college radio and television stations. The main mission is to identify and impart areas of excellence in the hands-on facilitation of station functions such as philosophical engagement, community involvement, programming arrangement, branding/logo development, student management, volunteer recruitment and broadcast equipment. Through the Signature Station Competition, the BEA recognizes and rewards remarkable advisers, students and stations at BEA’s annual convention held in Las Vegas, NV.

“By being the only station that has received this honor twice — and in the span of just six years— REV89 continues to deliver the high-quality educational experience that our university is proud to provide,” said Associate Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Leticia Steffen. “I’m continuously impressed by the professionalism and dedication our students, under the guidance of station manager Jenna Mangino and media communication department chair Sam Lovato, display with REV89. We’re very fortunate to be able to offer our students this amazing educational opportunity in CSU-Pueblo’s College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.”

Chair of the Student Media Advisors Division of BEA Robin Cecala said, “The radio competition was very tight this year. Your work was professional and the judges were very impressed.” KTSC-FM REV 89 was chosen as being superior in content, creativity and execution. The panel of judges included academic and radio industry experts who critiqued the station in several categories, including audio production, announcing, music programming, station policy, web presence and social media.

Rev 89 reaches 18,800 listeners per week and is currently the 5th most listened to radio station in Pueblo. The Federal Communications Commission-licensed station boasts nearly five decades of continuous operation, beginning Oct. 12, 1970. The radio station is part of the digital media curriculum in the media communication department and is staffed by students majoring in the department.
