    CHECKLIST FOR PREPARING A MUSIC DEPARTMENT PERFORMANCE

    1. Selecting a date

      • Type of program - Festival/Conference, etc.
      • Institution sponsoring the performance
      • Department sponsoring the performance
      • Title of the concert
      • Names of performing groups
      • Names of conductor/soloist, accompanist
      • Date of concert/time
      • Title of composition(s) - op. #s, catalogue #s, dates of composition if relevant
      • Complete names of composers, even familiar ones
      • Birth and death dates of composers - living composers write b. 1901 instead of 1901 - ?
      • Names of editors/arrangers - etc... - translations by ?
      • Title/tempo indications of single movements
      • Separate listing of performers or soloist in conjunction with separate titles
      • Purpose of the concert - presented in partial fulfillment of......
      • Name of applied teacher (s) of the featured students in recital ... is currently from the studio of........
      • Names of managers, committees, and members
      • Names of directors, arrangers, collaborators, etc. not involved in the actual performance
      • Names of directors, groups, costumes, fighting, coaches, choreographers, stage managers, orchestral managers, chorus master, scenic design, and others as needed
      • Acknowledgments of help given, special consultants, use of facility, etc.
      • Acknowledge permission to produce work
      • Program notes and their author's name
      • Plot outlines
      • Texts, translations, and authors
      • Indication of intermission or pause
      • Other directions to the audience - no pictures, recordings, etc.
      • Background information on soloist(s), conductor, special performers
      • Background information on performing groups
      • Background information on tour, series, festival (if relevant)
      • Notice of dedications or premieres of a particular work
      • Notice of forthcoming concerts or related future events

    Guidelines for departmental recitals

    1. Recital dates and times will be scheduled in this order of preference:
      Seniors
      Juniors
      Sophomores (Symposia; solo or joint recitals may be requested and will be scheduled only if the Departmental calendar permits)
      Freshmen (Symposia; solo or joint recitals may be requested and will be scheduled only if the Departmental calendar permits)
    2. All solo and joint recitals must be scheduled by mid-term of the previous semester. Requests are to be turned in to the applied teacher at the beginning of that semester, and will then be brought before the full music faculty for discussion and scheduling.
    3. Scheduling full recitals or in combination:
      Seniors -- solo recitals with a minimum of 45 minutes of music, otherwise must share a joint recital, preferably with another senior. The applied teachers involved may approve combinations proposed by students. Juniors -- should share joint recital with 1 or 2 other individuals; each individual should perform 30 minutes of music.
    4. Penalties for failing to be adequately prepared for pre-hearing or recital:
      The pre-hearing MUST be successfully performed by mid-term of the semester in which the recital is to be played, and at least four weeks prior. If the pre-hearing is failed, the recital may not be performed and is canceled. This may result in a grade of 'F" being assigned for the semester, and the course must be retaken. All fees associated with the course are forfeit (including accompanist fee), and new dates must be scheduled before mid-term for the following semester. The applied instructor also has the discretion to change the planned repertoire as they see fit.
    5. Other considerations
      • A limited number of recitals will be scheduled as outlined above. In addition, certain programs on the concert calendar will be selected as required attendance for music majors the remaining being considered optional. A published number of optional programs will be chosen by the student in order to complete the required concert attendance minimum. Only Senior recitals will be considered required.
      • Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen may be required to perform on Departmental recitals even if they have scheduled a solo or joint recital.
      • A student may not schedule more than one solo or joint recital in any given academic year.
      • Students are responsible for all matters concerning solo and joint recitals, including meeting deadlines, hiring an accompanist if needed, providing said accompanist with music when required, publicity, scheduling and setup of the performance hall, and all other necessary functions.
      • Any considerations or exceptions not fully covered in these guidelines are left to the discretion of the Music Chair and the Music Faculty.

    The following are examples of Jury Grading Forms for your consideration. The first is an instrumental form, the second a vocal, and the third a piano form. These are intended as examples to guide you in preparing for your juries. See your advisor for specifics regarding literature, etc.
