Voice Festival

Saturday, November 14, 2015

Purpose: To promote quality solo singing with appropriate repertoire for young singers.

The voice department at CSU-Pueblo will be holding our first solo singing contest on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at the Capps Cappozolo Music Building on CSU-Pueblo’s campus.  The voice festival includes a contest in the morning where students will sing two solos for a judge (no audience admitted for this part) and receive a score.  At 1:00 there will be a recital for which the participants will sing one of their songs.  In order to avoid duplications of songs on the recital, that song will be chosen by the Voice Festival director.  Awards of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each category will be given directly following the recital.

This festival is for those from 6th-12th grades.  Categories are as follows: Middle School Category 6th-8th grades; Junior Category 9th-10th grades; and Senior Category 11th-12th grades.  For those students who are unsure about competing, there will be the opportunity to sing for comments only but not receive a score.  Singing in the recital would be optional.

Further Information: Registration fee: $12 Repertoire Requirements:
  • 2 songs are to be sung, 1 from classical literature and 1 from musical theatre literature.
  • Songs should be contrasting in tempo.
  • Appropriate literature should be chosen.  Recommendations include songs from Folk Songs for Solo Singers, Easy Songs, The Young Singer, 1st Books (Boytim), 26 Italian Songs and Arias, Teen Musical Theatre, and Hal Leonard/Alfred Musical Theatre Books.
  • No pop songs or songs from opera or operetta.
Dress Code:

The dress code is nice conservative.  No tennis shoes or jeans.  Ladies should not wear revealing dresses or blouses. Dresses or skirts should be no shorter than right above the knee.

Morning Contest Procedure:

The student will hand original music to the judge then announce his/her name and first song title and composer.  Be prepared to wait a few minutes until the judge signals to start the second song.  Announce the second song title and composer.  The judge will not give verbal comments.  Once the student has sung, he/she should thank the judge and then leave the room.

Afternoon Recital (1:00 p.m.) Procedure:

The student will choose one song to sing in the afternoon recital. All students meet at 12:45 outside of room 205 to go over recital order and procedure.  A printed program will be used; therefore the student will not need to announce his/her name or song.  The recital will go in grade order starting with the Middle School category.  Once everyone has sung, awards will be announced.
