Emphasis Areas

Students interested in the Media Communications BA/BS program must choose one area of emphasis. This emphasis area allows students to dive deeper into an area of interest through specific courses.

Digital Media 

Radio + Television + Interactive Media

Students preparing for careers in radio and related industries have opportunity to work at KTSC-FM, the university owned and operated broadcast station which serves Southern Colorado. Students contribute to the production of local programming and have many opportunities to learn the operation of a working radio station.

The television production facilities and courses allow students to prepare for careers in television and related industries. Laboratory courses are offered at  KTSC-TV, the Public Broadcasting affiliate located on campus, which serves southern and western Colorado. Students contribute to the production of local programming and have many opportunities to learn the operation of a working television station.

Interactive media includes web design, multimedia design and related skills. Students have access to a multimedia computer lab with the latest software. Usability, accessibility, and designing for interaction are some of the topics addressed in class.

Digital Media Course Offerings

Multimedia Journalism

The Journalism emphasis provides fundamental instruction in interviewing, reporting and writing for all media and prepares students for careers in the evolving world of print and online media. Journalism students learn how to analyze and synthesize information from a variety of sources to write clear, compelling articles for publication.

In journalism classes, students gain knowledge and build skills via a wide range of practical exercises in news, feature and editorial writing, news reporting, publication makeup and design, and copy editing. Students then obtain hands-on experience working with the Today, which is both an online newspaper and a printed news magazine, and through internships at local, regional and national media outlets.

The skills students learn in the journalism emphasis prepare them for all communications professions that require dissemination of accurate, understandable and interesting information.

Multimedia Journalism Course

Strategic Communication

The Strategic Communication emphasis includes the disciplines of advertising and public relations and is designed to prepare students for all aspects of communication and promotion that help accomplish such goals as selling products and services, advocating on behalf of causes, issues, or individuals, and representing organizational reputations to the greater public.

Although the Strategic Communication emphasis blends advertising and public relations as dominant areas of study, students are also exposed to the entire promotional mix including sales promotion, direct response, special events, and interpersonal communication.

Students studying in the emphasis will develop expertise in promotional strategies and tactics, integrated communication campaigns, traditional advertising and public relations writing techniques, and audience research methods, all within the framework of digital media technology.

Strategic Communication Course Offerings

Spring 2022 Registration

Registration Opens October 18, 2021.

To register for Spring 2022 courses, students will need to meet with their academic success coach or faculty mentor, submit proof of vaccination or exemption, and self-register through Banner.

Vaccination Requirement and Exemptions
