The Department of Mathematics & Physics is hosting Dr. Damiano Fulghesu on March 6th at 3:45 pm in the Physics-Math Building Room 103. Please join us for his talk entitled Counting Curves, Abstract: Classical problems in enumerative geometry ask to count the number of curves which satisfy some geometric properties. One of the most ancient examples is Apollonius's problem of counting the number of circles simultaneously tangent to three given circles (second century BC). In this talk, we explore similar problems that involve curves on the plane and we develop some general counting techniques.
